I went to bed at 9pm last night because I was so utterly exhausted and we will be busy this weekend.
The office has been a loon land because we had to have X amount of students or the course would be cancelled. At 4pm we found out the final cut and guess who had to ax four classes all by herself, contact all the students by phone, followup email all the students, contact all the school people connected to the classes, blah blah? Didn't get out of there until 5:30pm. My hands/arms were so sore and numb in places the rat had to rub them for about a half-hour to relieve the pain and numbness.
Saturday is is A-Kon out at the airport at one of the hotels. We went last year knowing only dbz. Will be interesting this year, having more knowledge and series under our belts. Wearing a Gravitation shirt, evil me. rat definitely wants to do the cel painting class again!
Sunday is the last day of Scarborough so we will be there.
Gotta run and get ready since we are leaving here no later than 8am to get to the airport and do the tram dance to get to the hotel. We park WAY out in the boonies (as suggested by the con) and use the buses and trams to get to the hotel.

A bad bill for choice
Are you 35 or older and pregnant?
Your obstetrician will probably recommend amniocentesis. House Bill 15, which just passed in the Texas Senate, eliminates abortion as a choice for most Texas women who discover a catastrophic fetal problem through amniocentesis. It severely restricts the facilities that can perform abortions after 16 weeks.
Women also will be required to wait 24 hours before an abortion can be performed. During the 24-hour waiting period, the Senate decrees you should be reading the state "information packet," which outlines health-risk "facts" that the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health have all declared to be untrue.
In other words, the "information packet" is a packet of lies.
The arrogance and veracity of the senators supporting this legislation is breathtaking. Sen. Robert Deuell, R-Greenville, a staunch supporter of this bill, refuses to waive the waiting requirement, even for rape and incest victims. He claims that he knows "maybe hundreds of women [who were victims of rape and incest] who have been happy to carry the child to term." "They've been a blessing," Sen. Deuell asserts.
Only 15 counties, out of 254 in Texas, still dare to provide abortions. Highly organized fringe groups effectively have terrorized most doctors and almost all hospitals from offering this service. Now they have almost succeeded in closing down the few facilities still open by piling on ludicrous restrictions.
And Rick Perry stands ready to sign their edicts into law.

Backers regrouping after energized foes' legislative triumphs

AUSTIN – The 80-hour work weeks and metal bars on the office windows have not fortified Kae McLaughlin or her goals this legislative session.
She and her mission – "to make sure abortion is safe, legal and accessible" – have been pummeled.
From her seat in a tired green brick office next to a coin-operated laundry, she looked back over the last five months. "It's hard to call anything a victory," the director of the Texas Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League said. "We can't count on anything."
Now that the legislative leadership is all Republican, the long-stymied plans of anti-abortion groups have wheels.
Bills that had been hobbled, stalled and derailed are rolling along.
For Elizabeth Graham, the Capitol cafeteria has been her office away from Houston, and from that vantage below the rotunda she has helped orchestrate a menu of triumphs. But there is no hint of gloat.
"It's never a done deal, and I don't in any way take anything for granted," the associate director of Texas Right to Life said.
Her tailored suits with their straight, disciplined lines convey part of the agenda she is advancing. She wants her organization presented as one of modern, reasonable professionals.
"I don't want to perpetuate the myth that we're a bunch of fat, white guys working out of church basements," she said. "We carry a message of hope."
Compared with results in past Legislatures, these five months have been on message and on target.
"It's dramatically different," she said, and conceded a smile. "It's far more pleasant."
Among their apparent victories:
• A 24-hour waiting period, mandating doctors give patients a packet of information designed to discourage abortion and making abortions after 16 weeks more difficult to obtain by moving them to hospitals.
• Imbuing a fetus – from the moment of conception to birth – legal status as an individual.
• Cutting $13 million from Planned Parenthood's contraception and women-wellness programs, which could be saved only if the organization closed its privately funded abortion facilities.
Ms. Graham believes the measures will protect tax dollars, give women better health care and greater protection for their unborn children.
It's a message of caring and outreach, said Ms. Graham, who left a career in retail management six years ago. It's one that sells.
"There is a perception that we're an extremist, angry force and that you have to be against every abortion or we'll picket your house. The idea that abortion should be made illegal overnight is old school," she said.
She said that more than one in four women in Texas has had an abortion and they "don't need to be shunned or made to feel more guilty," she said.
Ms. Graham also works in other outreach. Last week, when the 24-hour waiting period passed the Senate, she wandered the Capitol until she found a corner with a clear cellphone signal.
"I called 100 of our top donors," she said. "They were thrilled."
Assessing the damage
Away from the Capitol, in a cluttered office where the saying, "Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape," is taped on the wall, Ms. McLaughlin also is calling donors.
She too is selling a message, one of alarm that says the battle must be joined.
"I think our people have been complacent," she said. "This session we've lost things that will take us years to get back."
Currently, 15 of the state's 254 counties offer abortion services. Ms. McLaughlin said the waiting bill is another burden for women who must travel long distances to obtain those services.
For those who learn their fetus is severely abnormal, such medical test results almost always come after 16 weeks. And that measure will restrict any abortion after the first trimester to an ambulatory surgical center.
No abortion clinics qualify under those provisions, and no ambulatory centers perform abortions, she said.
"There's no respect for women's health or well-being," Ms. McLaughlin said. "Everything is on the table now."
She takes exception to Ms. Graham's belief that this session's abortion bills reflects moderation.
"Their proposals are still outrageous. They just don't have to be as strident because they have the leadership on their side," Ms. McLaughlin said.
So Ms. McLaughlin has been mobilizing backers. On the 24-hour waiting period bill, abortion rights advocates generated 7,700 contacts with lawmakers, she said.
"I think the only victory we can claim from this session is that the pro-choice community is responding," Ms. McLaughlin said.
Close to the action
That's one of the reasons Ms. Graham keeps her office in the halls of the Capitol. In her face-to-face meetings, sometimes lawmakers will confide that they're a little worried about the "four or five" negative e-mails they've received on abortion bills, she said.
Within a few hours, she'll find Right to Life members in those lawmakers' home districts, call them and request that they write a few thank-you notes to their representatives.
Ms. McLaughlin hopes those notes won't be enough.
"Every indicator I have is that the pro-choice community is incensed. They didn't know how far it would go," she said. "I think the voting public truly believed that the candidates would exercise some restraint in this agenda."
She said the bills moving through the system, in addition to directly curtailing access, also border on harassment. They include fines on physicians of $10,000 for noncompliance, require higher fees, more registration, increased paperwork and are designed to make abortion more expensive.
She also worries that other proposals – such as requiring abortion providers to perform pathology reports on each fetus – could be tacked on to other legislation.
She said some of those bills were only stopped when the Democrats hightailed it to Ardmore, Okla., for four days.
"If it's not a big issue in the election of 2004, the Republicans will have the Democrats to thank for leaving so they couldn't pass everything they were going to," Ms. McLaughlin said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Graham sees Right to Life back in the Legislature bigger and stronger in two years. She doesn't know what the wish list will include yet, but she does know one thing:
"What happens in Texas will so go the nation," she said.
AUSTIN — A push to create a "Choose Life" license plate was derailed in the Texas House Sunday when a San Antonio Democrat said a committee that passed the bill violated a House rule requiring two hours' notice of a meeting.
"This bill won't come back," said Rep. Larry Phillips, R-Sherman, sponsor of the measure that contained the license plate provision. He said he'd look for other ways to revive the bill.
Committee deadlines have passed and the session ends June 2.
Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, called the "point of order" after Republicans moved to cut off debate and vote on the bill despite several proposed amendments yet to be considered.
He said the House Transportation Committee met May 14 and voted out the legislation without giving enough advance notice, as rules require.
The maneuvering sparked tension in the chamber, where several members raised their voices at each other and cursed as they discussed the bill long after Speaker Tom Craddick sustained the point of order.
Besides allowing for new specialty plates, the bill would have changed the way Texas issues the tags to make the process consistent. It also allowed for the sale of Texas souvenir license plates.
Some money generated from the fees, an estimated $1.9 million over the next two years, would have gone to the state's general revenue fund and the transportation fund for road projects.
But it was the anti-abortion plate amendment by Rep. Arlene Wohlgemuth, R-Burleson, that drew the most passionate debate and sparked the parliamentary battle.
Wohlgemuth wanted a portion of the $30 raised from sale of the plate to go to charities that help pregnant women and adoptive parents and that encourage women not to have an abortion.
"It is devoted to trying to make sure those babies are born to begin with," Wohlgemuth said.
Proponents said people who choose to buy the plate should have the right to know their money is going to organizations they support.
Before debate was halted, Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, wanted to also create a "Choose Choice" plate that would also send money to the adoption charities. Her amendment failed 83-46.
Rep. Dawnna Dukes, D-Austin, argued Wohlgemuth's move was meant to erode a women's right to choose an abortion. People who support adoption charities could donate money to them without buying a license plate, she said.
"It's not about adoption; it's about making a political statement," Dukes said.
The bill also allowed for specialty plates for veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a Juneteenth tag, one for the March of Dimes and several others. Backers of those were upset with the measure's demise.

Yes, got home Thursday evening, ate a baked potato, fell asleep in front of the TV, woke up at 7:30pm and decided to nap more in bed, woke up at 10:30pm and said to hell with it and went back to sleep. So I didn't get anything done I had planned on doing last night. Still feeling a bit groggy. My body was burning up hot last night when rat woke me up crawling into bed so maybe I was fighting a subtle bug and did not know it.

A three-day weekend (Memorial Day holiday) starts today! We have a cook-out being held by the soon-to-be big boss on Saturday and we are going to Scarborough on Sunday with our best friends, chibi in tow. Since they found out the day care WILL be closed on Monday and they know we don't mind him (he is SO chibi Sage-like it is a bit scary) we decided to go Sunday instead. This will give me Monday to recoop. I hate being a permanent cripple...

Work must really be pulling it out of me since I am so exhausted by the end of each day and I am NOT staying up late like usual.

It is taking too long for me to get the new & improved site going so I have decided to continue updating the old one until the new one is ready to go. So now I need to throw together an aniversary graphic tonight, get the 1000 hits graphic done tonight and perhaps/could be/maybe add some oekaki, since I have gotten back to drawing one a night again.
Joules, you really should consider trying oekaki... If you are a bit daunted (trust me, I am still daunted by all the tools!) you might consider getting the oekaki potato applet for The Zone so you can play there. I have asked the rat to look into it for my site but he hasn't done anything about it yet.
Only thing that went wonky was when I saved watercolour skintones of a tinted drawing as a photoshop file and when I went back to it a little later the skintones were all yellow-tinted. Blegh. Plan to save as painter suggests instead of as psd files in the future. But I don't need the alpha channel because the watercolours are transparent, wow!
Did not think it was going to work because the box said the os had to be Windows 2000/XP and we have Win98, but the software seems to do just great!
Two of the bosses are itching to see the software so I am taking up tomorrow so they can do a temp install to look at it, which will be wiped out when the computer (which has Deep Freeze) is turned off. If they like it I suspect they will both order it. I am talking about them biting my ankles in their desire to see it!

Things are rectified with eBay, who got back with me in about two hours, instead of the minimum 12 they say. They switched everything back, which got me the motherfucker's email address, and Joules, I bless her immensely, sent me a url to hunt down the ISP. The fuckwad uses a company in Madrid, Spain and I have sent them a complaint about their client. Just because the fucker uses a Spain company does not necessarily mean he/she is in Madrid, you know.

Anyway, work is utterly crazy because I am having to update ALL the standardized syllabi. All of them have to have all the room numbers changed since we moved to the new building, the lab hours changed (one set of times for Summer, one for Fall), policies changed, new courses added, old courses deleted, WECM course descriptions & learning objectives for each course checked against the state website and changed if needed, blah blah blah...
Of course, the shared drive gets filled up and I have to go throw old stuff away just to save new stuff (I just LOVE Windows XP - xtra problems) and sometimes I cannot save because I get a 'out of ram' message, yet if I save under a different name it saves just fine. Crap...
Someone has gone in and hijacked my eBay account! I got two emails stating I had changed my email and my password, which I have NOT done! I have reported it to eBay but I get crap back about taking 12 to 72 hours for a reply!
I am REALLY pissed about this! I bet some little shit who is upset because I win stuff and they cannot has done this to me. Luckily the IP address is provided when this was done so eBay can track the little shit down. I wish I could figure out a way to hunt the fucker down...

Well, my hands have been killing me when I type. Although the semester is over I have to cram three months of work into three weeks before the next semester begins. Work has been VERY busy and a bit stressful. Have to type A LOT of stuff up, send out copious emails and basically cripple myself every day so by the time I get home I don't want to get near the computer. I can still draw fine because drawing does not impact the tips of my permanently semi-numb fingers.
Anyway, finished off three Eiri/Shiyuuichi pics yesterday. For the most part they had already been done, just needed final clean up before the 'official' signoff. Note Syu-chan's spelling. I worked out his name phonetically and that's what comes out, Shi-yu-u-i-chi. Thought that was kinda interesting, since Maki sensei spelled his name Syuichi in the first artbook and Shuichi in the second art book. Plan to get the pics scanned in and photoshop/fireworks enhanced this next week, pending hand pain. For the most part, the majority of the enhancement will be stuff like shirt and cushion textures. Painter 8 HAS been shipped so I am anticipating trying it out with layers like I do with photoshop. Hope it has an alpha channel.
Anyway, off to take my mother out to Scarborough. We are going out early to see Opening Gate and some of the early shows and the parade, then probably leave.

Crockett got a call last night from five-year-old Alexander, inviting us to Ladies Night tonight. His dad explained how Alex had heard the phrase on TV and liked it, so he wanted to do one too. So Ladies Night at the Freiheit's tonight will consist of hotdogs and probably PS2 games.

We are taking mine out to Scarborough today for our annual trip. Will probably pick something out for her there. She really doesn't 'need' anything but if a ring or pair of earrings catch her eye we will get her that. Of course, we will go to the joust. Last year Roy gave her the wooden heart he had speared, presented to her in front of the whole crowd. Pretty cool.

Much better than my first time. I refused to jump off the diving board so I did not get my badge until much later, after we had moved to TX. By then I was older than some of the kids in the class and was always taller so I was so out-of-place. The fact my mother dressed me funny did not help matters.
I finally did get my badge and actually got all the way up to finishing intermediate. The next step was water safety, like learning how to rescue people, and I think my mother was a bit afraid of me to do that. Silly mother, I am a natural floatation device!

Well, last night I felt and heard a flutter in my ear and was a bit dizzy. Woke up this morning with a piercing headache, fluid behind the ear, dizziness and nausea. Crockett had to call me in sick. I could not sit up at all and slept most of the day, trying to escape the pain. Had to resort to taking the Zyrtek again to help clear it up. Haven't been taking any sinus drugs lately and this is one of the results from it, fuck... I suspect the headache is pms-related.
Finally felt better about 8:30pm this evening. Still feeling headache pressure but definitely better.
Missed Roxie's graduation and could not get in touch with her to let her know what was going on. Hope she forgives me.
It is done. Lots of problems. I will need to completely revamp the main navigation page so all the graphics will load immediately with a 56k modem, which they do not do now, so the menu rollovers do not work after the visible graphic has loaded. I need to figure out either how to do some kind of preload or figure out a way to make the graphics smaller so they load quicker, or both. I know it will work fine for class, with the T1 connection, but it needs to be friendly for the average viewer.
This is due Wednesday evening at 6pm so if you find anything really screwed up please let me know by 1pm Central Standard Time so I can fix it in time for class.

final project
Last night I got a reality check about my final project and decided what I show in class will not be the final product that will go live on the real site. The parameters of the final project are forcing me to change the structure I have already set up for my site for real so I decided I would meet the final project requirements then strip it back down for what I want to do.
To that end, I made a bunch of gravi screenshots last night so I can have two non-nav pics on each active page as designated by the assignment. Attempted to make them so they somewhat pertain to the subject matter. I really didn't want to do that since I do not have permission from Sony to do this but I am pretty desperate right now. I only have two days and three nights to work on this and I am feeling the pressure big time. I wonder if I can take some time off next week...
